Inlays and onlays are a great treatment to repair damaged teeth. Inlays and onlays are a way to get indirect restoration done on your teeth.
What are Inlays and Onlays used for?
To treat teeth that have decay or damage lying within their indented top surfaces, between the cusps of the teeth. Which is not visible to the naked eye, in such case inlays and onlays are a must.
Inlays or onlays are used when a cavity is too large to be filled with a traditional filling. When there is a lot of damage then getting inlays and onlays become extremely necessary. These tooth pieces are made of pressed porcelain, ceramics, composite resin or gold depending on
your requirement. Whether an inlay or onlay is needed depends on the location and size of the cavity. Inlays are put between the cusps while onlays are larger and cover the cusps.

This method gives us a leg up and allows us to determine which treatment is right for each patient. That being said, inlays and onlays allow us to provide patients with a great alternative to crowns or tooth extractions.
When Are Inlays & Onlays Necessary?
Inlays and onlays are a great treatment to repair damaged teeth. There are times when the damage done to a tooth by decay is too extensive to be treated with a simple filling, yet not significant enough to need a full-coverage crown. In these cases, inlays and onlays are a great method of tooth restoration. The added advantage is that using an inlay and onlay instead of a crown allows you to retain more of your tooth, which provides great long term benefits. It is a great solution but it all depends on the amount of damage. In case of heavy damages, inlay and onlay will not work.
What are the advantages of inlays/onlays?
They are prepared under a microscope so their shape can perfectly match, providing for perfect aesthetics and full reconstruction. Is exactly like you natural teeth, you cannot make out the difference that is the biggest advantage. Also, as you retain more of your original tooth is a more permanent solution.
They are also great for replacing older metal fillings. In contrast to metal fillings, they do not change in shape or size while exposed to changes in temperature. They are also more stable and last longer. Instead of weakening, they even strengthen the tooth in question. Hence, inlay and onlay are a great solution.
